Description
Helianthus annuus
Originally a cross between skyscraper and Giant Russian, we have grown this variety for 10 years. These sunflowers are immensely tall at an average 3 meters and the heads grow up to 40cm. The stalks grow super thick and need staking so that they do not fall over in the wind.
A fabulous crop for children to grow, sunflowers can be planted in a circle to make a cool nature playhouse and teepee for beans or cucumbers to grow up. Sunflowers also provide much needed food for the bees and excellent carbon for the compost.
Growing Conditions
Grow from seed in a tray and plant out once the first true leaves have sprouted. Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot, preferably against a north facing wall. Keep an eye out for snails and slugs the first few weeks after planting. If you can’t place them against a wall then planting the seedlings in a bunch rather than a row helps them to support each other in the wind.
