Description

Come learn how to identify tasty edible weeds with me!

Come explore our permaculture garden and get a crash course in plant identification and how to encourage nutritious wild “herbs” in your garden.  I prefer the word herb as most of the ‘weeds’ we identify as are in fact sacred herbs designed to heal us.

Discover a range of edible, nutrient-dense plants that grow in your garden and come away with a more relaxed outlook on your unruly garden patch.

From nasturtium to feverfew, borage to self-heal, there are so many beauties right under our noses and I look forward to offering you a new way of seeing the world through the lense of ‘weeds’.

During our edible weed walk we will help you;
-Identify the most common seasonal weeds growing wild, and talk about how you can use them in your diet.
-Learn how many of the so-called “weeds” in your garden can be beneficial to your health and the health of our planet.
-Gain confidence in allowing parts of your garden to ‘re wild’ in order to increase diversity and encourage edible weeds to grow.
This mini-workshop will be hosted on our developing Permaculture property and will finish with a cup of tea and sampler of wild weed pesto.

Your host…

Bridget Scully has been “working with nature” to create ecological balance in her gardens for over a decade.  While studying Sustainable Horticulture and Permaculture Design, her mentor Nathan Foote installed an appreciation for ‘do nothing’ methods of creating productivity inspired by natural farmer Masanobu Fukuoka from Japan.  Bridget spent a year learning the grow biointensive method of Nathan and went on to practice under Kay Baxter at the Koanga Institute where she spent 8 months developing their seed gardens, and learning seed production and processing techniques. It was at Koanga that she completed her PDC (Permaculture Design Certificate). Since then, Bridget has inspired and helped many people design and create their own ecological gardens from scratch. In 2020 after years of searching, Bridget and her family became kaitiaki of an 1/2 acre urban property in Gisborne. They are currently developing a sustainable foodscape and animal forage system using Permaculture Design and a strong alliance with Nature.
