Description
Emu beans are a realiable snap bean that crops heavily over a long season. These climbing beans have short, round tender pods with a light purple streak and a sdlicious flavour. Emu beans can be used as a dry bean and are our favorite for making home-made baked beans.
Growing Conditions for Emu Beans
Beans can be planted in Spring as early as September depending on your climate. They are frost tender and will not do well in cold, wet weather.
Direct sow beans into the ground, or grow in pots. Take care not to leave in pots for too long as the roots grow fast and can soon become root bound. Plant out into the garden once true leaves have formed.
Emu climbing beans grow best up against a wall, side of the house or with strong trellis. Emu beans will grow up chicken wire, bamboo stakes or solid fencing. These beans will grow over 2 metres if give the space to climb.
Harvest young beans to use in salads, stir fries, curries or as a healthy snack with dips. To harvest emu bean seeds for drying, leave on the vine as long as possible ideally until they are dry. Remove bean seeds from dry pods and store in an airtight, dry glass jar.
